NEW ORLEANS – The LSU New Orleans golf team got off to a slow start but improved each round to shoot a 909, good for a 14th-place finish during its time at the Argent Financial Classic over the past three days.
Freshman
Fynn Wanke had the best individual round (69) and 54-hole score (221) in his collegiate debut. Wanke shot 3-under-par during Monday's second round after making birdies on five of his final nine holes.
He improved by 10 strokes between the first and second rounds and moved up almost 40 places on the leaderboard. He finished the tournament with 39 of his 54 holes at par or better and led the Privateers in birdies with 11.
Baron Vollmer, who had the Privateers' best individual effort in the season opener in Sandestin, had a third round to remember as well after shooting 2-under-par Tuesday afternoon. Like the team, the freshman improved each round at Squire Creek, with scores of 78, 75 and 70, leaving him with a score of 223.
Vollmer made six birdie putts and his first collegiate eagle on the 528-yard, No. 2 hole Tuesday afternoon. After carding a 70 during the final round, Vollmer moved 13 spots up the leaderboard.
Jude Bourque finished with a score of 235,
Gabriel Gallego finished one stroke behind him with 236, and
Matthew Lotz finished with a score of 241.
The Troy Trojans slipped past North Texas and Louisiana Tech on the final day to take home the team championship with a score of 846. Nathan Woodham of Lamar and Oskari Schuvalow of Louisiana Tech tied for the individual championship with a score of 206.
The Privateers return to the course in just under two weeks when they make the trip to Jonesboro, Ark., for the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate at RidgePointe Country Club on Oct. 12-13.
