HOUSTON, Texas – A late first set rally fell just short for the LSU New Orleans Privateers as they lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-18) to the HCU Huskies on Thursday night at Sharp Gym.
The Privateers led for most of the early stages of the opening set and had a 10-8 advantage when HCU turned the momentum to their side. A five-point run keyed by two Sa'Myah Medford kills gave the Huskies a 13-10 lead.
HCU was able to keep themselves for the remainder of the set and was on the brink of taking it with a 24-19 lead. The Privateers turned up the pressure late though as they saved the Huskies' first four opportunities at set point before Medford closed it out on the fifth time of asking, which gave HCU an early lead in the match.
After holding on in the first set, the Huskies opened a sizable lead early in the second. They went on a 9-3 run to start and had a .500 hitting percentage for the set by the technical timeout. The Privateers could not get closer than within four points of the Huskies for the remainder of the set.
The Privateers dug out of an early 7-2 deficit to tie the score at 10-10 thanks in large part to two
Ryan Williams kills and two
Rylie Hallman aces. HCU responded with a 6-0 run of their own to assert command once again. That run was enough for the Huskies to see out the remainder of the match and score their first conference victory of the season.
Medford had 12 kills to lead the Huskies' offense and also contributed five digs and three blocks. Joya Euhus notched a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. HCU had a 50-35 advantage in the kill department and hit .328 to the Privateers' .156.
