Privateers Defeated by UIW in Three Sets

NEW ORLEANS – The UIW Cardinals served 15 aces as they defeated the LSU New Orleans Privateers 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon at the Human Performance Center.

The Privateers got out to a quick 6-2 lead in the opening set, but the Cardinals started to take over through a service rotation from Victoria Hall that provided two aces. UIW proceeded to score on nine of the next ten rallies to surge ahead 11-7.

UIW continued to increase their lead throughout the opening set and their eighth service ace, which was engineered by Bella Ceja got the Cardinals out to a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set saw UIW start quicker as they began the set on a 7-3 spurt. The Privateers were threatening to close the gap as they scored four straight points just before the technical timeout, aided by kills from Armie Hall and Alana Pierce.

However, UIW turned away the comeback threat with three straight points of their own, which extended their lead once again to seven.

The Cardinals and Privateers were locked in a tight battle early in the third set. UIW got up to a 13-8 lead, but LSU New Orleans closed the deficit to within two points on two different occasions, the last of which was on a kill by Ryan Williams which trimmed the UIW lead to 17-15.

However, the Cardinals closed the match with a flourish, going on an 8-1 run. That was keyed by two kills from Calissa Allison and three total points (two kills, one ace) from Teddy-Raye Ewers.

Allison neared a triple-double as she had 16 assists, a team-high 11 kills and eight digs. Lilly Roach finished with nine kills and Vanessa Eregie added six. Ashton Rogers had nine of her 12 digs in the third set. Ewers added a team-high 14 digs.

INSIDE THE BOX
Hall led the Privateer offense with seven kills and added three total blocks on defense. Williams finished with five kills. Defne Eciroglu had 13 assists and six digs. Mia Lopez had nine digs to lead the Privateer back row. Nyakuak Lual and Alana Pierce each had four total blocks.
