Privateers Fall on Short End of Fierce Four Set Battle Against Idaho

NEW ORLEANS – The LSU New Orleans Privateers were on the brink throughout the night but could not convert set points in sets two and four as the Idaho Vandals took the match 3-1 (21-25, 26-24, 25-21, 26-24) on Thursday night at the Human Performance Center.

The Vandals were down 24-23 in the fourth set when Alaina Armstrong produced a kill to move the set to extra rallies. Idaho scored through a service ace by Koen Makaula, which set them up for their first look at match point.

Sophie Danielson, who started the night hot, finished off the proceedings with her ninth kill of the evening.

The Privateers overcame an early 12-2 deficit in the kill department as they closed out the opening set in their favor. Idaho had six service errors in the opening set and the Privateers finished out the set with a 7-3 spurt. That was keyed by two points each from Armie Hall and Derin Nur Aydin.

LSU New Orleans was behind 15-9 at one point in the second set, but a big rally off a service rotation from Mia Lopez trimmed the Vandals lead to just one point. The Privateers kept battling and put themselves in front 24-23 off a kill by Ava Frerman in her collegiate debut.

However, the Vandals saved the Privateers' lone look at set point on a service error. Idaho won the next two points with a tandem block by Danielson and Anika Hudson leading to a 1-1 tie in the match.

The Vandals went ahead 2-1 in the match after closing out a tight third set with a 5-1 run. Kiana Greer had two of her team-high 16 kills in that stretch.

Greer finished with 16 kills and three total blocks. Sarah Sullivan had 15 kills and Kyriah Trefren finished with a team-high 19 digs. Makaula was in on six of the Vandals' 10 blocks.

INSIDE THE BOX
Hall finished with 13 kills and five total blocks. Laura Piva added nine kills while Derin Nur Aydin had eight kills and a .467 attack percentage. Lopez had 18 digs and Peyton Cole finished with 12 digs. Nyakuak Lual was also in on five blocks.
