CARROLLTON, Ga. – The West Georgia Wolves had a 39-24 advantage in the kill department as they defeated the LSU New Orleans Privateers 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-14) on Friday night at The Coliseum.
The Privateers were left to dig out of a deep hole at the outset as West Georgia put together the first five points and 12 of the first 15 of the match behind a .500 hitting percentage in their first 10 attempts.
West Georgia coasted from there to take the opening set. Aside from an efficient attack, the Wolves also had six aces from the service line to the Privateers' one.
Set two started with both teams trading points in the early stages. The first 10 rallies were split evenly before the first big run of the set, which was engineered by West Georgia. The Wolves scored on 10 of the next 13 points before the media timeout to grab a seven-point lead.
The Privateers rallied back to trim the deficit to two points, but West Georgia withstood the late push by the visitors with a six-point spurt of their own to put themselves on the brink of set point, which they converted at the third time of asking.
West Georgia began the third set with a quick spurt once again as they took a 15-8 lead to the media timeout. They did not relent as the Wolves closed out the set and the match to move to 2-0 on the weekend after their earlier win against Garnder-Webb.
Brooke McCall finished with 11 kills to lead the offense. Valiree Schmus added nine kills for the Wolves offense. Girogia Mandotti had a team-high 19 digs to go along with four service aces.
INSIDE THE BOX
Laura Piva and
Armie Hall co-led the offense with seven kills.
Nyakuak Lual finished with three total blocks.
Mia Lopez had 17 digs and closed the day with 36 total over two matches.
