NATCHITOCHES, La. – The LSU New Orleans Privateers were locked into three fierce set battles, but fell short in each losing 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) to the Northwestern State Demons on Saturday afternoon.
In what turned into the deciding third set, the Privateers rallied from an 11-7 deficit thanks to three kills from
Armie Hall and two kills each from
Ava Frerman and
Laura Piva, which helped vault the Privateers to an 18-16 lead.
An intense set, just like the two preceding, came down to the wire. The Demons grabbed a 24-23 lead from an Amber Craig kill and they proceeded to finish the match on their first attempt from a Gillian Grace Wolf kill.
The Demons slowly built upon an opening set lead to the technical timeout. The Privateers grabbed the lead briefly at 7-6 off a Northwestern State attack error. However, the Demons responded by scoring on nine of the next 12 rallies to jump in front 15-10.
Northwestern State built their lead to 21-14, but the Privateers threatened to snatch the set away. A 6-0 run helped the Privateers narrow the Demons' lead to just one. Northwestern State responded with a kill from Elsie Sanchez and a tandem block to bring them to a set point opportunity. The Demons converted through a Kenadii Winfrey kill.
The Privateers had the lead throughout most of the early stages of the second set. LSU New Orleans led 12-9 when the Demons went on a 7-1 run to grab the lead by the technical timeout.
Nyakuak Lual helped the Privateers get back on level terms with aces on back-to-back serves. Piva had a kill that tied the score again at 21-21, but the Demons closed out the set in their favor thanks in part to two Olivia Nzioki kills.
Wolf had six of her 10 kills in the third set. Sanchez led the Demons' offense with 16 kills. Jade Longlad had 36 assists.
