Women's Basketball Travels to Texas, Faces UIW and A&M-Corpus Christi

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (2-10, 1-2) will hit the road for a Texas road trip when they face the UIW Cardinals on Thursday and the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Saturday. Tip for the games will be at 5:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.

The Privateers held HCU under 40 percent from the field in their last outing at home, a 62-54 loss. It was the seventh time this season New Orleans held an opponent under 40 percent. That instance occurred nine times in 23 games last season.

Hennessey Luu-Brown finished with 41 points over two games last week. That included a career-high 27 against Lamar. Luu-Brown leads the team in field goal percentage and has moved to third on the team in scoring.

New Orleans has a winning record against the Cardinals since they joined the Southland in 2014. New Orleans is 9-6 against UIW. The two teams split a pair of meetings with each winning on their own home court in the 2021-22 season.

Saturday ended a long streak for the Privateers. They had previously hit a three-pointer in 147 consecutive games before Saturday when they were held without a three against HCU in 12 attempts.

The Privateers are 3-15 all-time against the Islanders and have not won in Corpus Christi in eight games.

UIW (5-8, 0-3) is led by Nina De Leon Negron in scoring. The junior from Puerto Rico is averaging 12.4 points per game and scored 25 against UT-Arlington. Negron also leads the team in three-pointers made (18) and total assists (31).

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-6, 3-0) currently leads the conference. Alecia Westbrook is averaging a double-double at 11 points and 10 rebounds per game. She is a two-time Southland Player of the Week. The Islanders are averaging nearly 22 free throw attempts per game with 305 total in 14 games.
