Women’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to A&M-Corpus Christi, 43-40

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The New Orleans women's basketball team took third-place A&M-Corpus Christi to the wire but the Privateers fell just short in heartbreaking fashion, 43-40 to the Islanders in a Southland Conference contest at the Dugan Wellness Center on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rehema Franklin finished with a team-high 10 points to go with three rebounds and a game-high three steals.
- Mia Deck chipped in six points along with one board and an assist.
- Whitley Larry and Vaquela Pimpton each recorded five points apiece. Larry added a game-high nine rebounds. Pimpton wrapped up the game with two assists, two boards and a steal.
- Asia Woods posted totals of four points, seven boards, two steals and a block.
- Jada Duncantell concluded the game with four points, two rebounds and a game-high three steals.
- The game was a defensive battle from the start as the Privateers scored seven points and the Islanders finished with just six after one quarter of play.
- The trend continued into the second as New Orleans held A&M-Corpus Christi to single digits for the second straight quarter as the team took an 18-13 lead into the half. Both teams shot just 5-of-26 from the field (19.2 percent).
- The Islanders started to bounce back a little in the third as they recorded a 15-10 advantage to tie the game at 28 heading into the final frame.
- After a back and fourth quarter, the Islanders held a three-point lead with 22 seconds remaining. The few chances the Privateers had to tie up the game didn't work out as A&M-Corpus Christi escaped with a 43-40 victory.
- The back and forth affair featured seven ties and seven different lead changes.
- New Orleans got 23 points off the bench to go with 14 points in the paint and 11 points off of turnovers.
 
NOTEWORTHY
- The Privateers held the Islanders to their lowest scoring output of the season as they allowed just 43 points. It was the lowest point total for A&M-Corpus Christi since a 70-31 loss to Lamar back on Dec. 30, 2017.
 
FOR THE FOES
- Alexes Bryant finished with a game-high 13 points to go with eight rebounds, four blocks and an assist in the Islander victory.
- Dalesia Booth rounded out the A&M-Corpus Christi scoring attack with 10 points along with seven rebounds and a steal.
 
NEXT UP
The Privateers take the short trip up to Thibodeaux, La. for another Southland Conference contest as they take on Nicholls on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 1 PM CT at the David R. Stopher Gymnasium.
