GULF SHORES, Ala. – The University of New Orleans (6-2) concluded the March to May at Gulf Shores Main Public Beach with victories over Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (4-3) and Austin Peay State University (0-2) on a busy Saturday. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., the Privateers recovered following a 4-1 loss to #RV Tulane University (8-6) with a 3-2 win over the Islanders at 1:20 p.m. and the 5-0 sweep over the Govs at the site of the 2019 NCAA Beach Volleyball National Championships.
Maxine Walsh and
Alexa Spartz earned a win versus the Green Wave, a team receiving votes in the AVCA National Rankings. The duo concluded the day with a win versus APSU. At the top spot,
Veronica Corcoran and
Rachel Kuhn improved to 7-1 on the year with today's 2-1 outing.
Ally Carr and
Victoria Corcoran closed out their first weekend as a duo (2019) 3-1 with
Blessing Dunn and
Brianna Vega sitting at 2-2.
Madison Miller and
Rhyan Rand are now 5-3 at No. 4.
#RV TULANE DEFEATS NEW ORLEANS 4-1
Walsh and Spartz remained perfect at No. 5 with a 21-19, 23-21 victory over Gabriella Becerra and Kilani Daane, but the Green Wave were able to secure the win 4-1. At No. 2, Dunn and Vega threatened Rio Frohoff and Lauren Orlich before TU squeaked past UNO 21-17, 21-18.
Veronica Corcoran and Kuhn regrouped and looked to force a third set against Tulane's top pair, but the Green Wave handed the duo their first loss on the year 21-12, 21-18.
NEW ORLEANS DEFEATS TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI 3-2
All five flights went three sets as the familiar foes battled with the Privateers coming out with a 3-2 victory over the Islanders.
Walsh and Spartz erased a 21-17 setback to take the second set at No. 5 21-19 and the back and forth continued in the third with TAMUCC handing the UNO pair its first loss of the season, taking the set and flight 17-15. Despite the loss, there were many bright spots for the first-year duo as Walsh and Spartz began the year 4-0.
Rand and Miller took the opener at No. 4 21-16 over Demi McInnis and Kylie Kvam. After falling 21-17, Rand/Miller buckled down to take a close one 15-11 to win No. 4 for the fourth time this season.
Victoria Corcoran and Carr did the same, matching with a 21-16 opening-set win and 21-17 setback. The pair was able to take the flight with a 16-14 W over Emma Coudon and Lael Ceriani.
Dunn and Vega threatened throughout No. 2 as Rachel Young and Madison Green needed to reach 23 to down the UNO duo in the opening set. Dunn and Vega salvaged the second with a 22-20 victory before TAMUCC took the flight 15-12.
Veronica Corcoran and Kuhn dominated their way to a 1-0 lead, defeating the 'Ders' top duo Selina Marolf and Abigail Devido 21-13. Forcing a third set after the Islanders squeezed past Vern and Rachel 21-19, UNO's No. 1 pair moved to 6-1 on the year with a 15-9 victory and the 3-2 win for the Privateers.
NEW ORLEANS DEFEATS AUSTIN PEAY 5-0
The Privateers blanked the Govs in impressive fashion to conclude the March to May 3-1. Walsh and Spartz took No. 5 21-15, 21-15 and Rand and Miller made it 2-0 with a 23-21, 21-15 win at No. 4.
Victoria Corcoran and Carr cruised at No. 3 21-15, 21-11 and
Veronica Corcoran and Kuhn continued their hot start to the year with a 21-10, 21-17 win at No. 1. Dunn and Vega were busy with another three-set flight, but the duo came out victorious 21-16, 14-21, 15-8.
