NEW ORLEANS, La. - The New Orleans Privateers announced the addition of Louisiana native, Brittany Johnson to the women's tennis team, announced the Privateers Athletic Department on Wednesday afternoon.
Johnson is currently in her senior season at Iota High School where she is ranked third in the 2015 class in Louisiana and in the Top 50 in the Gulf South. Johnson also played basketball through her junior season and was a two-time All-District selection, but has decided to solely focus on tennis this year.
"This year, my senior year, I have decided to give up basketball and focus strictly on developing my tennis skills. Coach Kanga and the team made me feel very welcome on my visit, and I am very excited to continue my education at UNO and do my very best to represent our university," said Johnson.
This past summer, Johnson was invited to represent Louisiana in the Southern Cup Tennis Tournament in Tennessee where she faced some of the top players in the Gulf South region. Johnson has also been a state qualifier the last three years at Iota.
"Brittany is a terrific athlete who played high school basketball and tennis, and she is presently ranked in the top 50 players in the south. She is also a solid doubles player, which is where we need to get stronger. She will be our first signee from Louisiana in a number of years," said Head Coach
Burzis Kanga.
Academically, Johnson, a native of Jennings, La., carries a 3.6 grade point average and is slated to graduate in the top 25 percent of her class. Johnson will be the first Louisiana native to play for the Privateers women's tennis team since the 2010-11 season.
