Schwaner Caps Off UNO Rally Against UALR

NEW ORLEANS ? Nick Schwaner's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the University of New Orleans to a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday at Maestri Field.

Schwaner ripped a line drive to right field off UALR reliever JR Boling (2-2) to help the Privateers (21-29, 11-15 Sun Belt Conference) even the three-game weekend set.

Schwaner went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and was one of four Privateers to tally multiple hits. UNO had 13 hits overall.

UALR (15-31, 6-18) also managed 13 hits but struggled with six errors.

UNO closer David Burch (2-0) picked up the win.

“Give credit to our kids because they battled today,” said UNO head coach Tom Walter. “Nick is our go-to guy, and he's the guy we want in that situation. He put a great swing on it, and he came through at the perfect time.”

Tyrone Wethers went 2-for-5 and scored the game-winning run, while Jay Morris, Jerad Comarda and Kyle Maldonado each added two hits.

The Privateers were down 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh before rallying to tie it. Morris, Comarda and Schwaner did the damage with run-scoring singles.

The pitching tandem of Randy Verdin and Burch then held UALR's offense in check. The Trojans managed just two hits in their final three at-bats.

The pitching set up UNO's final rally in the 10th.

Wethers led off the frame with an infield single and moved to second on a perfect Ryan Eden bunt. After UALR intentionally walked Morris, Boling struck out Comarda before Schwaner pulled a two-strike breaking ball safely into right field.

Nate Brown went 3-for-5 -- including two triples -- for the Trojans while Matt Apfel homered for the second consecutive game.

The Privateers won for the first time in three extra-inning games this year.

The two teams will wrap up the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Maestri Field.
