Privateer Women's Tennis Splits Pair of Duals Saturday

NEW ORLEANS ? The University of New Orleans women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday, falling to Arkansas State 7-0 before defeating Jackson State 5-2.

UNO, which closed out the day with a 6-4 record, was blanked in the opening match for the first time since Jan. 25 as ASU (4-4) snapped the team's five-dual win streak.

The Privateer women got one match off the Red Wolves during the dual when Kozue Matsumoto and Cassandra Escobar defeated Tina Ojdanic.and Jenny Herring 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. The pairing improved to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in dual play with the victory.

The match would be the only completed match of the day for Matsumoto who would be forced to retire against Rone van Wyk at No. 3 singles.

ASU also picked up a straight set victory at No. 4 singles with the other four matches going three sets.

Escobar and Sofija Karalic lost in tiebreakers, with Escobar falling 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 to Paula Chelminska at No. 2 and Leydi Zora topping Karalic 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 at No. 5.

Other three-setters included Herring defeated Kemp 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 and Menna Kamal over Amber Garza at No. 6 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

In the second match of the day, head coach Burzis Kanga had to deal with a different lineup with Matsumoto unavailable against JSU (6-2).

The revamped lineup swept the doubles' point with Escobar teaming with Garza to defeat Asha Saravanamohan and Paulina Vargas at No. 1 doubles 8-0.  Kemp and Ceara Howey provided the other win, an 8-1 victory over Angela Rose and Britney Shy.

Anita Racz and Pia Dozo-Moreno completed the sweep with a walkover win.

In singles' action, Escobar moved to No. 1 and defeated Vargas 6-2, 7-6 (1). The victory was one of three straight set victories for the Privateer women over the Tigers.

Kemp defeated Saravanahmohan 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and Dozo-Moreno topped Valentina Prado 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5.

In the matches that went for JSU, Howey fell to Shy 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 at No. 3 and Rose topped Karalic 6-2, 7-6 (5).

UNO will round out their weekend with a 12 p.m. dual against Austin Peay on Sunday at the University Tennis Center.
